RAFFIA, A STORY, A CRAFT

A LOVE STORY

Only a refined expertise with raw materials combined with the ingenuity of an artisanal workforce can embody creation.

A TREASURE FROM THE PAST

ARCHIVES

1930/40

During WW2, leather was scarce and was requisitioned mainly for military usage. Equipped only with their imaginations and readily available materials, the craftsmen began to create new typologies of shoes using rope, straw, cork and wood.

....

This model is hand-braided raffia and the platform consists of layers of braided raffia stitched together.
The buckle is in natural wood. Made In France.

BACK FROM VIETNAM

MODÈLE BANGKOK

1991

On a trip to Vietnam, Mr Clergerie observed women braiding straw into hats, shoe soles and other everyday accessories and immediately thought back to the archive.

....

Crafted in Vietnam, this model was made of natural braided straw and hand assembled without lining.
Noting the need for a more modern durability, a latex sole and leather footbed was developed in collaboration with the Lycée technique de la Chaussure de Romans by the house of Clergerie.

INVISIBLE,
BUT VISIBLE WHEN WORN

MODÈLE ARCO

2010

In our endless pursuit of artisanal excellence, we sought out new workshops. Renowned for its culture of craftsmanship, Morocco has become a modern hub for luxury raffia manufacturing.

....

The block was replaced by cork for lightness but retained the same look and feel of its archival ancestors.

INNOVATION

MODÈLE AIDA

2020

With a persistent eye on comfort and fit, our artisans create the first raffia style with a cushioned memory insole.

....
